Seattle's NHL team to play in 'green' Climate Pledge Arena

When Seattle's new NHL team takes the ice for the first time in 2021, it will do so at potentially the greenest venue in the sports world.

Per ESPN's Emily Kaplan, Amazon secured the rights for the arena that will house both an expansion NHL team and the Seattle Storm of the WNBA. The company is naming the venue Climate Pledge Arena and is hoping the International Living Future Institute will give it net zero carbon certification.

Ice will be made from rainwater. A majority of food will come from local farmers, and the arena will donate unused produce to food programs. The arena will also host "zero waste" events after music superstar Billie Eilish made her world tour eco-friendly last fall.

As Sabrina Barr of the Independent wrote, Eilish mandated that tour stops eliminate plastic straws and as much non-recyclable waste as possible. Eilish also allowed fans to bring reusable water bottles to shows.

Kaplan added that the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has slowed construction but also that Climate Pledge Arena is still scheduled to open for the 2021-22 NHL season.
