Roger Federer withdraws from Tokyo Olympics due to knee injury setback

Roger Federer will not be part of the delegation of athletes from Switzerland in this summer's Olympic Games.

The tennis superstar announced Tuesday he won't compete in the Tokyo Olympics after suffering a setback with his surgically repaired right knee.

Federer has taken on a lighter workload this season in an attempt to preserve his health.

The 39-year-old announced in June 2020 he would not play the remainder of the ATP Tour following a second knee surgery and didn't return to the court until March at the ExxonMobil Open.

Federer then withdrew from the French Open after winning a grueling match against Dominik Koepfer that lasted nearly four hours. At Wimbledon, he won his first four matches before falling to Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets.

Federer competed in the previous Olympic Games from 2000 to 2016. He won gold in men's doubles at the 2008 Games in Beijing and silver in men's singles in 2012 in London.
