Two athletes living in Tokyo Olympic Village test positive for COVID-19

Two athletes living in the Tokyo Olympic Village have tested positive for COVID-19, organizers confirmed Sunday, according to ESPN

The athletes who tested positive are not Japanese, and no names or other details were provided.

Organizers also said another Olympic athlete, who isn't currently residing in the Olympic Village, tested positive for the coronavirus. That athlete also is not Japanese.

The news comes after it was reported Saturday that a "games-concerned personnel" residing in the Olympic Village tested positive.

The Olympic Village in Tokyo will house 11,000 athletes during the Games and thousands of other staff members. Tokyo reported 1,008 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, the fifth straight day of more than 1,000 cases reported.

This summer's Games are set to open Friday under a state of emergency. Fans, both from Japan and abroad, have been banned from attending events due to the rise in COVID-19 cases.

Many Japanese residents are against the Olympics being held this summer, according to a recent poll, as 43% of people living in Japan wanted the Summer Games canceled.
