49ers GM John Lynch, coach Kyle Shanahan keeping draft plans secret from employees?

Practically immediately after the San Francisco 49ers traded with the Miami Dolphins to acquire the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, experts assumed San Francisco general manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan had a to-be rookie quarterback in mind for that asset.

Per Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area, NFL Media's Ian Rapoport said on Friday's edition of the "Rich Eisen Show" that neither Lynch nor Shanahan are offering any hints of their intentions.

"I also know Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch have not told people in their organization," Rapoport explained. "There's only a couple of people who actually really know, and they're not saying. ... I believe that very few people actually know the answer to this."

The 49ers have been linked in mock drafts and rumors with Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Mac Jones, and Rapoport added that the buzz linking San Francisco with Jones is "real." He also said that he spoke with Shanahan, and the coach admitted the 49ers are "definitely considering" Jones.

For what it's worth, two different CBS Sports analysts have the 49ers selecting quarterbacks other than Jones in updated mock drafts. Earlier this week, Walter Football predicted San Francisco will use the third pick to select Ohio State Buckeyes signal-caller Justin Fields.
