Becky Hammon reportedly a finalist for Trail Blazers head coaching position

Becky Hammon is very close to becoming the first female head coach in NBA history. 

According to The Athletic's Shams Charania and Sam Amick, Hammon is a finalist for the Portland Trail Blazers head coaching position, marking the first time a woman has gone into the final stages of an NBA coaching search. 

Hammon is in her seventh year on Gregg Popovich's staff with the San Antonio Spurs. She took over for Popovich on Dec. 30 after he got tossed from a game in the second quarter against the Los Angeles Lakers, making her the first woman to act as head coach of an NBA team.

The 44-year-old had a successful career in the WNBA playing for the New York Liberty and the San Antonio Stars. She was a six-time WNBA All-Star and made the All-WNBA First Team twice. 

The Trail Blazers have also reportedly interviewed Los Angeles Clippers assistant Chauncey Billups, South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley, Brooklyn Nets assistant Mike D'Antoni and Spurs vice president of basketball operations Brent Barry, Charania adds. 

Hammon also reportedly interviewed for the Orlando Magic head coaching job last week. Charania reported earlier this month that Hammon was considered a top candidate for the Portland vacancy.
