New Mets OF Starling Marte talks World Series expectations with team that 'has it all'

Starling Marte joined the New York Mets on a four-year, $78 million deal Friday night, and a day later he made it clear he's expecting big things from his new team.

“The Mets have it all," Marte said Saturday, via Hector Gomez of Z101 Digital. "It will be a great opportunity to play with them. They are in position to compete right now on a World Series.”

Marte, 33, spent the first eight seasons of his MLB career with the Pittsburgh Pirates and had brief stints with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Miami Marlins and Oakland Athletics in the last three years. Marte won Golden Gloves in 2015 and 2016, and was an All-Star in 2016. Last season, Marte batted .310 with 55 runs batted in and 47 stolen bases.

Marte was one of three signings by the Mets reported on Friday, along with outfielder Mark Cahna and infielder Eduardo Escobar.

The Mets finished the 2021 season with a 77-85 record and missed the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season.
