In an epic Game 7 thriller that went into extra innings, the Los Angeles Dodgers managed to overcome the odds in a comeback win that will be a playoff classic for a long time.
The game featured defensive gems and late-inning heroics that led to an 11th-inning finale where the Dodgers vanquished the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4, to win consecutive championships for the first time since the New York Yankees won three in a row, from 1998 through 2000.
But of all the key contributors, none stand above the Los Angeles ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who was announced the winner of the 2025 World Series MVP Award after the Dodgers’ Game 7 victory.
Yamamoto started Games 2 and 6 of this year’s World Series. In Game 2, Yamamoto threw a rare postseason complete game, giving up just one run and collecting the win. It was his second consecutive complete game, the first coming against the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 2 of the NLCS, making him the first pitcher to achieve consecutive postseason complete games since Curt Schilling in 2001.
In Game 6, Yamamoto again spun a gem, going six innings, giving up one run and collecting his second win of the Fall Classic. The very next day in Game 7, Yamamoto stepped into a tied game in the bottom of the ninth with runners on first and second and just one out. He would hit Alejandro Kirk with a 0-1 sinker to load the bases before escaping with the score intact. After 2.2 scoreless innings, Yamamoto secured the win and the series for the Dodgers.

In this year’s fall classic, Yamamoto pitched a total of 17.2 innings, surrendering two runs on 10 hits, two walks and a hit batsman while accumulating 15 strikeouts and three wins, managing a dangerous Blue Jays batting order like no pitcher has done in this postseason. In the playoffs in its entirety, Yamamoto threw to a remarkable 1.45 ERA with five wins and one loss in six appearances (five starts) spanning a total of 37.1 innings.
