The Philadelphia Eagles made several big moves to strengthen their secondary ahead of the NFL trade deadline, and they found out on Tuesday that one of those additions is stepping away from football.
Jaire Alexander, who was acquired from the Baltimore Ravens, informed the team he is deciding to step away from football for the time being to get himself right both physically and mentally before deciding on his permanent future within the game.
Alexander has been limited to just two games this season, and did not appear in any games for the Eagles after the trade. At his peak he was one of the better cornerbacks in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers, appearing in two Pro Bowls as a member of the team.
He signed as a free agent with the Ravens this offseason in the hopes that he could bolster their secondary, but it did not work out.
The Eagles seemed to be an opportunity for another fresh start, but he is clearly not in a position where he is able to contribute.

Even though the Eagles have two of the NFL's best young defensive backs in Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper Dejean, they still had a need for another outside corner.
Along with Alexander, the Eagles also acquired Michael Carter II from the New York Jets to help with the secondary.
Given that Alexander had not played yet for the Eagles they are not really losing anything from his decision to step away, but they did give up a sixth-round draft pick to acquire him.
