Report reveals Penn State's 'top target' for next head coach

Penn State is the most high-profile college football head coach job remaining now that both Florida and LSU have filled their vacancies, and the Nittany Lions reportedly have one name at the top of their wish list.

Longtime BYU head coach Kalani Sitake is Penn State's "top target," according to a report on Monday from On3. Sitake is currently in his 10th season with BYU and has the Cougars on the verge of their first College Football Playoff berth, so it is hardly a surprise that he is generating interest from a powerhouse school like Penn State.

The big question is whether Sitake would actually want to leave BYU, which also happens to be the former NFL fullback's alma mater.

Kalani Sitake has not dismissed the Penn State rumors

Sitake was asked on Monday about Penn State's reported interest in him as he prepares BYU for the Big 12 Championship Game against Texas Tech. He stopped well short of committing to the Cougars beyond the 2025 season.

"I'm all about the Big 12 championship and keeping our team focused on that," Sitake said. "We're going to avoid all of the distractions."

Sitake has won 11 games in each of the last two seasons, and he has a chance to surpass that number this season. BYU has had 10 or more wins in four of its last six seasons under Sitake.

At the very least, Sitake is probably using the interest from Penn State to angle for a new contract from BYU. That would be the smart thing for any coach in his position to do, especially now that he has the Cougars in the Big 12 title game and could lead them to the College Football Playoff. Even if he has every intention of remaining with his alma mater, Sitake's stock has never been higher.
