Chargers reveal Justin Herbert update following hand injury

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is on the mend.

On Monday, one day after suffering a fracture in his left, non-throwing hand, in a 31-14 win over the Las Vegas Raiders (2-10), the Chargers announced Herbert "underwent successful surgery... to stabilize" the fracture.

"Herbert's return to play is considered day-to-day, and his status for next Monday's game against Philadelphia will be determined later in the week," the team continued in a statement published to social media.

As noted, Herbert has an extra day to recover, with the Chargers not playing again until "Monday Night Football" at home versus the Philadelphia Eagles (8-4) on Dec. 8.

Justin Herbert medical update gives QB chance of playing vs. Eagles

The positive update from the Chargers (8-4) leaves the door open for Herbert to play in what will be an important game in the tight AFC playoff picture. Following Sunday's Week 13 games, Los Angeles holds the conference's first wild-card spot but is in a three-way tie with the Indianapolis Colts and Buffalo Bills. The Houston Texans (7-5) are a game back of the trio and eighth in the AFC.

The Chargers need every win they can get, particularly against the most grueling schedule for any team the rest of the season. Following next Monday's game against the Eagles, Los Angeles plays three of its final four on the road — against the Kansas City Chiefs (6-6), Dallas Cowboys (6-5-1) and Denver Broncos (10-2) — and at home against the Texans.

Herbert's availability will be crucial to his team's chances of beating a desperate Eagles squad that has lost two in a row and is on extra rest after playing Friday. With his surgery in the rearview, he could be on the field for the pivotal showdown.
