James Harden doesn't often come to mind when listing the top players in NBA history. But there is one thing you can't doubt about Harden: The man can score with the best of them.
Harden moved into 10th place on the NBA's career scoring list when he fittingly hit a pair of free throws in the third quarter of the Los Angeles Clippers' 109-106 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday. The second free throw gave Harden 28,290 points, one more than Carmelo Anthony, a former teammate with the Houston Rockets.
Harden, who was 20 points shy of Anthony before the game vs. the Timberwolves, finished with 34 points.
A 6-foot-5 guard, Harden is having a bit of a renaissance season. He entered Saturday averaging 26.5 points per game, the most since 2019-20, the last of his three consecutive seasons averaging 30 or more points when he put up a career-best 34.3 points per game. That was also the last of his three straight seasons leading the NBA in scoring.
Harden has been a mercurial NBA star. Now in his 17th season, Harden has played for five teams, including the Clippers for the last three. After being drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2009 draft out of Arizona State, Harden was traded just before the 2012-13 season to the Rockets.
He was on the Rockets for nearly nine seasons when he was dealt in a four-team trade to the Brooklyn Nets on Jan. 16, 2021. Just over a year later, on February 10, 2022, Harden was on the move again, this time going to the Philadelphia 76ers in a four-team deal. After re-signing with the Sixers that summer, Harden was dealt to the Clippers in a three-team trade on November 1, 2023.
While his fit on teams has often been questioned, his talent is undeniable.
Harden drew MVP votes for nine straight seasons beginning in 2012-13, winning after averaging 30.4 points in 2017-18. During his prime, he was one of the league's best 3-point shooters, leading the league in 2017-18 and 2019-20 in treys made per game (3.7 and 4.4, respectively). That also came thanks to volume, as he has averaged double-digit attempts in those three years (10 in 2017-18, 13.2 in 2018-19, 12.4 in 2019-20), all league highs.
But it has been the free-throw line where Harden has made his living. Beginning in 2012-13, Harden led the NBA in free throws made and attempted in seven of the next eight seasons, including the final six.
Harden entered Saturday averaging 24.1 points per game for his career and should pass Shaquille O'Neal for ninth place this season. O'Neal has 28,596 points. Harden now sits at 28,304.
