Another team enters bidding war for Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte

Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte has been a hot commodity on the trade market. Another team has reportedly entered the bidding war for Marte's services.

According to Sean McAdam and Chris Cotillo from MassLive.com, the Boston Red Sox have been in contact with the Diamondbacks regarding their second baseman. The Red Sox are one of several teams reportedly interested in bringing Marte on board.

McAdam and Cotillo noted that talks are in a preliminary stage and nothing is imminent. However, second base is a distinct need in Boston. Infielder Romy Gonzalez is presently atop the depth chart at second, but he is also atop the depth charts at first and third base as well.

Ketel Marte would be great first step to revamping Red Sox lineup

Marte would be an upgrade at the keystone. He has been one of the most productive second basemen in baseball over the last five years and continued that strong play in 2025. Marte posted a .283/.376/.517 batting line over his 556 plate appearances, hitting 28 homers and 28 doubles. He was solid defensively as well, grading out as roughly league average in his 878 innings at second.

Red Sox second basemen were respectable offensively in 2025, posting a combined .252/.314/.402 batting line with 21 homers and 37 doubles. They struggled defensively, however, costing the Red Sox nine runs over the course of the season.

The Red Sox have already started revamping the roster, acquiring pitcher Sonny Gray to add another top-of-the-rotation arm. Marte would be a distinct upgrade in every facet, lengthening the Red Sox lineup while helping the pitching staff with his defense.
