Facing pressure to avoid falling into an 0-2 series hole, the Carolina Hurricanes evened the NHL's Eastern Conference Final with a 3-2 overtime win over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night.
The much-needed win also made franchise history, snapping a long drought that's plagued recent Hurricanes teams. Carolina's Game 2 victory marked the first home win in an Eastern Conference Final in 20 years.
Enduring sweeps in three Eastern Conference Final appearances since 2006, the year the Hurricanes, led by Rod Brind'Amour as the team's captain instead of his current role as head coach, captured the organization's only Stanley Cup championship.
The win not only guaranteed a better result in this Eastern Conference Final compared to the others within the last two decades, but got Brind'Amour off the schneid as well. Brind'Amour, who took over as head coach starting in the 2018-19 season, was behind the bench for all three of Carolina's third-round sweeps in the springs of 2019 to the Boston Bruins and then twice to the Florida Panthers in 2023 and 2025.
And to secure the win, Nikolaj Ehlers scored the game-winner 3:29 into overtime. He got the puck past Canadiens goaltender Jakub Dobes by turning a rolling puck into a mean wrist shot off a breakaway.

And if Carolina ends up winning the series and reaching the Stanley Cup Final, Ehlers' Game 2 game-winning goal will be remembered by Hurricanes fans forever as one of the greatest moments in franchise history.
After losing the series opener in a 6-2 blowout, the Hurricanes now take their show on the road for a pivotal Game 3 on Monday night. Because while breaking the drought is nice, it's far from enough to make this season a success for a team with a second Stanley Cup for Carolina on their mind.
