Draymond Green is the key to the Warriors' offseason

The NBA playoffs are in full swing, and the best four teams are battling it out for a chance to play in the NBA Finals. While the Oklahoma City Thunder, San Antonio Spurs, New York Knicks and Cleveland Cavaliers are center stage in the conference finals, 26 other teams are watching from the sidelines.

Few teams that are not in the playoffs have more questions to answer this offseason than the Golden State Warriors.

There has been a lot of speculation about which direction they will go this offseason: add another veteran superstar to pair with Stephen Curry, or get younger players through the draft and free agency.

The biggest challenge was addressed when head coach Steve Kerr re-signed for two more years; now the most pressing issue is what forward Draymond Green will do regarding his player option.

Draymond Green’s player option looms large

Green has a player option of one year worth $27.6 million. Depending on what he decides to do with his future, exercise his option or opt out and find a new deal, his decision could ultimately determine the direction of the organization's offseason.

He has to make his decision by June 29, before the season begins. The choices are either to exercise his option or test free agency, potentially leaving the only organization he has been with for 14 seasons.

Depending on how the two parties feel, it would be wise to figure out the situation as soon as possible to have clarity of their options regarding roster construction during the offseason.

Depending on what Green decides to do with his player option, they could pursue many avenues based on their financial flexibility. Either in the draft or free agency, a potential expiring contract worth $27.6 million could be very enticing for another team in a trade.

The reality of their situation is that they're keeping every opportunity open in terms of acquiring talent to bring into the organization because they are far away from the top teams in the NBA, according to ESPN NBA analyst Bobby Marks.

Marks joined the Warriors' flagship radio stations, 95.7 The Game, midday show "Steiny and Guru" to discuss the toughest issue with the organization.

Marks believes that their core players, Curry, Green and Jimmy Butler, are uncertain regarding their durability. Also, he thinks if Green does opt out of his contract and resigns for multiple years instead of one year, it could be on an average annual salary starting at 19 million.

By Green opting out of his contract, signing for a two-year deal for less money, the big three of Kerr, Green and Curry would be aligned, and the organization could add another productive player with a taxpayer mid-level exception.

The reality of the situation is that if Green opts in to his player option, it would be counterproductive to his wishes of being with the organization for his entire career.

His player option would be an enticing contract to another team looking to get out of more than $27 million due to it being an expiring contract. The Warriors would be able to bring in a player worth his matched salary if Green opts in and they trade him at the deadline.

In the most anticipated and unknown offseason of the Curry era in Golden State, the decision Green makes regarding his contract could be the key to which direction the organization will pursue in the offseason and in the future.
