Opening day at Mammoth Mountain, California, is officially delayed and no longer scheduled for Saturday, November 15.

The ski resort first planned to open on Friday, but pushed back to Saturday to take advantage of a storm currently passing through California.

That storm, though, “is not producing as much snow as we had hoped,” said Mammoth Mountain’s vice president of mountain operations in a social media update.

Before the storm arrived, meteorologist Chris Tomer noted the possibility of large snow totals across the Sierra Nevada with a caveat: the freezing level would be high.

The current conditions have prompted Mammoth Mountain to adopt a day-by-day model.

It’ll assess conditions daily and provide skiers with a 24-hour heads-up once Mother Nature gives it the green light, with plans to open as soon as conditions allow. According to the resort, colder temperatures and snowfall are in the forecast in the coming days.

The National Weather Service’s Mammoth Mountain forecast expects temperatures to fall at the ski resort this weekend into next week, with heavy snow starting tonight.

Today, freezing levels reached 10,000 feet, according to the NWS. Mammoth Mountain’s main lodge stands at about 9,000 feet. But by Monday, weather that should be more favorable for skiers is in the forecast: snow and a high near 24 degrees.

Mammoth Mountain isn’t the only ski resort to face weather delays this fall. Schweitzer, Idaho, is now planning a November 28 opening after hoping to start the season on November 21. In a blog post, the resort’s COO cited rain and warm temperatures.

Utah’s Brian Head and Solitude Mountain have also had to adjust their opening dates.

Around California’s Lake Tahoe, ski resorts like Palisades Tahoe and Northstar are still aiming to open later this month.
