Carlos Terán remains one of the most talented players in the entire Chicago Fire organization but his career has yet to really take off despite recently finishing his fifth season in Major League Soccer with the club.
Injuries played a major role in Terán’s 2024 season and the defender was limited to his fewest starts, appearances, and minutes since 2021. Each time it seemed like Terán was going to get into a rhythm by playing consistently, he picked up another knock and eventually missed the final five matches of the season.
Terán has been with the Fire since 2020 and remains under contract through the 2026 MLS season but has always had a desire to test himself in Europe at some point in his career.
New Chicago Fire director of football and head coach Gregg Berhalter was asked directly about Terán at his introductory press conference. The former USMNT coach still sees talent in the center back but did leave the door open for a potential move.
“I see a player with a ton of potential, and you don't often get that type of package in a center back, being that commanding, physically, that adequate on the ball,” said Berhalter. “I think he has the potential to be a top center back.
“It hasn't gone exactly the way he would like it for his time in the Chicago Fire. It's just about having conversations with him and really trying to understand his point of view and where he is coming from, but I agree, a player with high potential.”
If Terán really wants to make the jump to Europe, 2025 would be a great time for the defender and the Fire to get something out of a potential transfer.
