Manchester City may have a battle on their hands to sign Bayer Leverkusen prodigy Florian Wirtz. The German international has starred for Bayer Leverkusen as they have stormed to the top of the Bundesliga. His strong form has put him on the radar of a host of clubs across Europe including Manchester City.

Graeme Bailey has reported for HITC that Manchester City are in the mix to sign the Leverkusen prodigy this summer. He adds that City would face competition for Florian Wirtz. Bailey reports that Liverpool and Bayern Munich are also intent on signing Leverkusen’s star midfielder.

Florian Wirtz has the potential to be a cornerstone of Manchester City’s midfield

There is no doubting the talent and pedigree of the Bayer Leverkusen prodigy. Florian Wirtz has starred in Xabi Alonso’s side’s rise to the top of the Bundesliga. He has added 10 goals and contributed 17 assists in 34 appearances this campaign. The young midfielder has been instrumental in Leverkusen’s unbeaten season as they sit 10 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga.

As a player, Florian Wirtz appears ideally suited to Pep Guardiola’s squad. His playmaking ability and eye for goal could see him potentially slot immediately into City’s midfield. With Kevin De Bruyne closer to the end of his illustrious career Wirtz could be the ideal player to groom as a replacement for the City legend. There is also the tantalising prospect of Wirtz being paired with Phil Foden at the heart of City’s midfield. The pairing of Foden and Wirtz would give City two elite young playmakers with plenty of scope to grow as players.

The future of Florian Wirtz may be the summer’s biggest transfer story

The future of Florian Wirtz could become the biggest transfer story to watch for this summer. With the Leverkusen prodigy playing a starring role in Leverkusen’s rise this season a host of clubs across Europe appear keen on securing his signature.

Manchester City appear to be at the front of the queue for the talented playmaker. If they could secure the signing of Wirtz it would be a huge signing for the champions. Signing a player who could potentially dominate their midfield for years to come would be a huge coup for the European champions.
