Alicia Fox reflects on making history and inspiring others.
In 2010, Alicia Fox became the first (and only) Black woman to win the WWE Divas Championship. She did so by defeating Eve Torres, Maryse, and Gail Kim in four-way at the only Fatal 4-Way pay-per-view the company ever held.
During a recent interview with DS Shin of Ring The Belle, Fox reflected on what that moment was like for her.
“I don’t think, in my mind, I had any concept of what this was to the audience or to the locker room,” Fox said. “I was so scared, I was so nervous. At that point, I was so nervous that I was going to mess it up all the time.”
Fox noted that she was surprised when she won the Divas title as she wasn’t feuding with the champion Torres at the time.
“I think that’s the one thing, too, about wrestling is you’re always chasing the high because the card is subject to change. I’m trying to remember [when I found out], I feel like maybe a week before or maybe the day before.”
Shin also brought up how Ariane Andrew (fka Cameron) and Amari Miller have both cited Fox as inspirations for their own in-ring careers. While initially in disbelief over the positive things that were being said about her, Fox went on to call it “empowering.”
“It’s really empowering because I feel like I’m in finally a name they can call me. You know what I’m saying? So I’m happy to celebrate it today,” she added.
