The next few weeks will be crucial to determining whether Mario Hermoso remains as a Atletico Madrid for next season and beyond. The 28-year-old has become a crucial player for Diego Simeone in the last couple of years, but given that his current contract is expiring at the end of the campaign, there is a strong chance that he departs in the summer.

Currently, contract negotiations between Atleti and Hermoso’s camp have been rather fruitless. Los Rojiblancos want to reduce his current wages – believed to be in the region of €4m per season – but this is something that the player is unnerved by, and he is fully aware that he can get better offers in England and Italy.

Now, Saudi Arabia could arrive to throw another spanner in Atleti’s plans to renew Hermoso. According to Marca, the Middle East are prepared to come calling with a contract offer that would double what he is currently earning in Madrid.

At this stage, it does appear highly unlikely that Hermoso stays at Atletico Madrid. Big changes are expected at the club this summer, and one of those could be to find a replacement for one of their most important defenders in recent times.
