Lionel Messi isn’t deciding on his future until after the 2022 FIFA World Cup as the veteran forward wants a clear head in his attempt to help Argentina win the trophy that has long eluded him.

Reports suggest that Paris Saint-Germain wants Messi to remain past the 2022-23 football season, but a possible return to FC Barcelona could be an option for the Argentine.

Despite the financial situation the Spanish club finds itself in and one of the reasons the 35-year-old had to exit in the summer of 2021. However, Barcelona’s vice-president of economics, Eduard Romeu, believes the La Liga side can sign Messi in 2023.

“It would be possible financially because if he returned it would be as a free agent,” Romeu said to El Mati de Catalunya Radio (h/t Mirror). “But it’s a decision which has to be made by the coaching staff and the player.

“It doesn’t correspond to me [to make those decisions], but it would be viable. Although I don’t have it in the budget. He is an icon of the club. This will always be his home, but it will be a technical decision [if he returns].”

It will be interesting to see what Messi decides to do with his future once the World Cup is over, whether the Argentine wants to continue in the French capital or jumps on any opportunity to return to Barcelona.

However, Messi may also leave Europe to finish up his career in the United States as he’s been constantly linked to Inter Miami in the best.
