Manchester United loanee Alvaro Fernandez is attract interest from Portuguese giants Benfica.

The Spain U-21 international felt ready to be part of United’s first-team this summer, but he was overlooked when Sergio Reguilon was signed on loan following injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

In a recent interview with The Athletic, Fernandez revealed Ten Hag made it clear he would not feature in his plans – but that has not stopped him giving up on his United dream.

Ten Hag’s plans for Fernandez could change – but are United really going to fend of interest if clubs like Benfica make a serious offer for his signature?

According to O Jogo, as per Sport Witness, Benfica are ‘interested’ in signing Fernandez in the January transfer window.

Fernandez is currently out on loan at La Liga side Granada and has made 13 appearances so far this season. It’s been a successful loan for the young left-back after another positive stint away at Preston North End last season in the Championship.

The report states Benfica have ‘set their sights’ on Fernandez and want him to strengthen their left-back options next month.

It remains to be seen if Ten Hag decides to keep Fernandez, but he wasn’t totally convinced by the player in the summer when he was lacking left-backs.
