Ismael Bennacer will return to Milan and undergo a round of medical tests in the coming days after he suffered a muscle issue whilst at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The 26-year-old midfielder played 80 minutes of Algeria’s tournament opener against Angola but was absent for the following two group matches against Burkina Faso and Mauritania due to adductor problems. Algeria ultimately finished bottom of their group, falling at the first hurdle.

Milan were already concerned when Bennacer jetted off to AFCON. The midfielder had only recently returned from a knee operation that kept him sidelined for over 200 days and had made just two league starts before leaving to join the Algeria squad.

As reported by Calciomercato.com, Bennacer is set to return to Milan within the next 48 hours following Algeria’s group stage exit at AFCON. He’ll quickly undergo a round of tests so the club can examine his adductor issue, which isn’t expected to be too serious.

Regardless, the 26-year-old will not take part in the Rossoneri’s coming Serie A clash with Bologna on Saturday and could return for the following game with Frosinone on February 3.
