Thiago Silva could complete a summer move back to his boyhood club, Fluminense, as his time at Chelsea draws to a close. The veteran defender is set to announce his decision to leave Stamford Bridge in the coming days.

Fluminense in Race to Sign Veteran Chelsea Star

A Cult Hero

Silva joined Chelsea after spending an eight-year spell at Paris Saint-Germain, where he established himself as a club legend. His free transfer to Stamford Bridge in 2020 generated little excitement among the fans, but his impact surprised all sceptics.

The former AC Milan star helped Chelsea win the Champions League in his first season at the club before claiming the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup in the following campaign. The Blues have added a number of younger players to their backline in recent seasons. However, Silva’s experience and his imposing presence at the heart of the defence line have been difficult to replace.

Where To Next?

Last week, Silva confirmed that he will announce a decision on his future in the next few days. Spending the final weeks of his current contract at the club, the former PSG star is expected to leave Chelsea as a free agent.

According to Evening Standard, Fluminense are eager to take their former player back to Brazil ahead of the next season. However, the 39-year-old believes he can play at the highest level for another season.

Silva was in tears when Chelsea lost their FA Cup semi-final clash against Manchester City on Saturday, missing out on a chance to claim a trophy in his final campaign at the club.

What Have Fluminense Said?

Silva seems to be on his way to returning to Brazil if a new European offer doesn’t arrive this summer. Fluminense have already made it clear that they are willing to sign the ‘incredible’ centre-back ahead of the next term.

Speaking to ESPN Brasil in March, club president Mario Bittencourt said of Silva’s possible return (via Daily Mail): “It depends much more on him than on us.

“But he said that when his contract ends there, he will return home. I hope he comes back.”
