Cameroon dramatically booked a place in the round of 16 at the Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday after scoring two late goals in a 3-2 win over Gambia.

The five-time champions appeared to be heading for an early exit when substitute Ebrima Colley fired Gambia into a 2-1 lead in the 85th minute.

An excellent volley from Ablie Jallow had drawn Gambia level 12 minutes earlier, after Karl Toko Ekambi had headed Cameroon 1-0 up.

At 2-1 down, Cameroon were on course to finish bottom of Group C - behind Senegal, Guinea and Gambia.

But a James Gomez own goal gave Cameroon hope in the 87th minute before Christopher Wooh headed home the winner in added time.

Highlights: Gambia 2-3 Cameroon

Cameroon eventually finished second in Group C with four points, behind Senegal with nine.

Guinea also ended with four points and will go through to the last 16 as one of the four best third-placed teams.

Manchester United keeper Andre Onana watched the entire game from the bench on Tuesday after being dropped by Cameroon boss Rigobert Song following an unconvincing display in last week's 3-1 defeat by Senegal.

Onana did not make a single save against Senegal but his replacement, cousin Fabrice Ondoa, stopped five of Gambia's seven shots on target on Tuesday.

Cameroon will now take on Nigeria on Saturday. The winner of that game will progress to the quarter-finals.
