A recent list on the One Football app showed the top twenty sides statistically in the UEFA Champions League made for some interesting discussion.

Real Madrid unsurprisingly topped the list in 1st place with the likes of Bayern Munich, Juventus, AC Milan, Manchester United and Liverpool in the top ten.

Our own club Celtic were named in 20th place which is a fantastic achievement considering our resources compared to some of the sides above us and even below us on the list of fantastic sides. No other Scottish club – dead or alive – made the cut. The story was published on our sister site Celtic Shorts the other day but unsurprisingly the red-tops have not reported in it.

It also makes a mockery of those who rubbish our contribution to European competition. We are the only Scottish side to make the top twenty with the so-called most successful club in the world, theRangers combined clubs were six places behind us.

Even at that the Ibrox club have used the record of the now defunct club to take their place in Europe’s elite list, as they can’t use their own as last season seen them finish up as statistically the worst side in Champions League group stages history.

As the competition’s format changes after this season its’s an embarrassing record that they will hold for eternity.

Celtic is often the object of ridicule by the Scottish mainstream media and theRangers supporters alike, but being named in the top twenty of the greatest sides to have took part in the prestigious Champions league shows how much were recognised at the highest level.
