UEFA have informally clarified that Serie A will be allowed to send six teams to the Champions League next season should certain conditions be met.

The Italian topflight has already mathematically secured a fifth spot in Europe’s premier club competition after topping the rankings for this season, leaving the other slot for either Germany or England.

As of now, Inter, Milan, Juventus, Bologna and Roma all look on track to secure a spot in the Champions League. The Giallorossi as well as Atalanta are still fighting for the Europa League, whilst Fiorentina are trying to find glory in the Conference League.

Sixth Serie A spot in Champions League

Page nine of today’s Corriere dello Sport details how UEFA are aware that Serie A could send a sixth representative to the Champions League next season and have written an informal clarification, which’ll soon be formalised and circulated, confirming the situation.

Should Atalanta or Roma win the Europa League, then a sixth Italian club would qualify for Europe’s premier club competition.

Only eight clubs from one country can qualify for Europe, so sending six teams to the Champions League would leave only one spot for Italians in the Europa League and the Conference League.
