Champions League quarterfinal to occur in Portugal without fans

As expected, supporters will not be welcomed to stadiums in Portugal when the 2019-20 Champions League quarterfinals begin via a single-game elimination format on Aug. 12.

Per ESPN's Adriana Garcia, Portugal Secretary of Health Antonio Lacerda Sales addressed the matter when asked on Monday if fans could attend games:

"Regarding the public and based on the current pandemic situation, obviously not. We don't know how the pandemic is going to evolve and as we have done in other situations, we will take measures according to the evolution of the pandemic. I cannot anticipate the future. In this phase obviously not."

Previously, UEFA held hope that a small percentage of fans may be able to attend the quarterfinals, semifinals, or Aug. 23 Final. The Final will occur at the Estadio da Luz.

UEFA moved the Final from Instanbul to Lisbon after it was assumed supporters wouldn't be able to attend the match in the Turkish city because of the uncontrolled virus outbreak.

As noted by Sport Bible, the Danish Superliga opened doors to supporters this month while enforcing strict social-distancing protocols.

Last week, Liverpool won the English Premier League while watching from home after Chelsea defeated Manchester City 2-1 at an empty Stamford Bridge.
