Retired Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini will continue his post-playing career in Major League Soccer with LAFC as their Player Development Coach, so is not returning to Juventus.

The 39-year-old hung up his boots on January 1 after taking Los Angeles FC to the 2023 edition of the MLS Cup.

He had been trying to decide between remaining in the United States of America or returning to his homeland, with reports that a job was being lined up for him at his old club Juventus.

However, it was announced this evening that Chiellini will remain with LAFC as a Player Development Coach, working with head coach Steve Cherundolo and the staff.

“We were thankful to have Giorgio play the final 18 months of his playing career with LAFC,” said LAFC Co-President & GM John Thorrington on the official club website.

“During that time he proved what an asset he is for LAFC in a number of ways, and we are excited to add a truly brilliant football mind, incredible leader and an even better person to our staff for the upcoming season.”

The centre-back started his career at Livorno, moving to Fiorentina in 2004 and then Juventus in 2005, where he remained until the move to LAFC in 2022.

Chiellini made 45 appearances for LAFC in all competitions, helping them win the 2022 Supporters’ Shield, two Western Conference titles and the 2022 MLS Cup, as well as reaching the final of the 2023 Concacaf Champions League.

He also amassed 117 senior caps for Italy, captaining the team to the EURO 2020 triumph.
