For the second game in a row, Sheffield United managed to let a two-goal lead slip, and once again in the dying moments.
The Blades scored three times within a 12-minute window against Fulham, with Ben Brereton-Diaz finding the net twice and Oli McBurnie adding another goal to the scoresheet, after claiming an excellent outside of the boot assist.
Sheffield United came close to securing a 4-1 lead, but McBurnie saw his goal disallowed due to an offside call which was given against Vinicius Souza.
The Cottagers pulled a goal back through substitute Bobby Decordova-Reid in the 86th minute. And in the 93rd minute, one of the most in-form forwards on the planet, Rodrigo Muniz, scored an excellent overhead kick. From that point, with another 11 minutes of injury time to go, Sheffield United fans were expecting a defeat.
Ultimately though, it’s reasons like this as to why the Blades are going to get relegated. To score five goals in last two Premier League games and only come away with two points is terrible.
Sheffield United can’t stop conceding goals
Sheffield United have now conceded a whopping a 22 goals from the 75th minute to the full time whistle. The next closest is Crystal Palace with 21 goals conceded.
To add, United have conceded 12 goals from set-pieces this term. On the flip side they have scored four goals from set plays. The Blades are one of the poorest, if not the poorest team from dead-balls in the Premier League.
The Blades have tough fixtures coming up
Sitting at the bottom of the table, the Blades now find themselves seven points adrift from safety. However, this match represented a missed opportunity for a crucial win that could have significantly bolstered their chances of avoiding relegation.
What’s worrying is they now have to face Liverpool and Chelsea this week, and the fear of a thrashing at Anfield could come true.
Chris Wilder’s reaction to Sheffield United’s draw with Fulham
Casting a frustrated figure in his post-match media duties, via the BBC, United manager Chris Wilder gave his reaction to the 3-3 draw against Fulham.
“I don’t think my team could’ve given anymore, especially in the second half where we went after the game. It was a slow start from us and was important we reached a clean sheet at half-time.
“We gave ourselves a foothold to get something out of the game and in the second half we grew in belief, scored a couple of goals and thought we were on the way to a valuable three points.
“I’m delighted with the attitude but obviously the result is difficult to take. Being 3-1 up, you expect your team to see the game out. The goals are poor from our point of view, with a set piece yet again.”
