Newcastle United endured two consecutive losses to Borussia Dortmund that could end their hopes of making the Champions League knockout stages. In England, the Magpies still have a chance to secure a return to the competition as they sit only four points out of fourth place. The Chronicle’s Lee Ryder reports that Harvey Barnes, an integral part of Eddie Howe’s attacking line, is close to making his return to the pitch.

Harvey Barnes Back in Training for Newcastle United

Winger’s Return a Big Boost to Eddie Howe

Newcastle’s 25-year-old left winger has been sidelined since September after he picked up an injury to his foot. The squad’s form has been inconsistent since then. Highlights include victories over PSG and Arsenal, but a draw with Wolves and the Dortmund losses shine a light on potential weaknesses.

Howe is attempting to ease Barnes back into the starting rotation ahead of a busy December schedule. Newcastle plays eight fixtures that month, and the taxing schedule will require all hands on deck for Magpies players and their coaching staff.

Barnes joined the English giants only this summer. An exact transfer fee was not reported, but pundits believe that the proven Englishman cost a handful. 45 goals with the Foxes, and many more on loan with MK Dons, Barnsley, and West Brom, necessitated that the 25-year-old make his anticipated move following Leicester’s relegation from the Premier League last season.

Described as “jaw-dropping” due to his skills on the pitch, Barnes made his mark early for Newcastle. A goal against Aston Villa in the English top-flight opener is just a flash of what he is capable of doing. Ryder and Howe are both optimistic about the quick return, with the journalist saying, “There is now light at the end of the tunnel.”
