Former West Ham striker Carlton Cole says Aston Villa manager Unai Emery fluffed their Europa Conference League defeat at Legia Warsaw.

Cole says Emery's tactics didn't work on the night.

He told talkSPORT: When I looked at Villa and I looked at Brighton they got a bit too excited, I think, in Europe.

"They got too excited, they just wanted to go and attack, they forgot about defending, you can't let in three goals in Europe.

First you have to shut the back up, any kind of goals going in, that's got to be watertight at the back, then you think about going forward. But I think they went gung-ho trying to get goals, you can't play the same way you play in the Premier League in that competition, you have got to be more defensive minded."
