Could Manchester City’s Portuguese midfielder Matheus Nunes be a weapon for Pep Guardiola in this season’s title race? The former Wolves midfielder put in a man-of-the-match performance last time out for City against Burnley. With a three-way battle looming for the Premier League title Nunes may have a key role to play.

Manchester City’s Portuguese midfielder does add something different to the champion’s midfield. His ability to run with the ball and his runs from midfield add another weapon to City’s armoury. The only player with a similar ability to Nunes is Kevin De Bruyne. While Matheus Nunes isn’t the same type of player as the Manchester City legend he does bring a different look to City’s midfield.

Speaking in the embargoed section of his pre-game press conference Pep Guardiola praised Matheus Nunes. He said he was delighted with his performance against Burnley and with what he adds to his team. The City manager said: “Everybody is delighted to have him in the locker room. The minutes he’s played was really good from day one and he has a specific quality that we don’t have, and didn’t have. In the transition play, he is one of the best I’ve ever seen. But of course, our way that we play and the dynamics sometimes it needs a little bit longer but at specific things, he’s fantastic. We are really pleased in the performance he had (against Burnley).”

Manchester City’s Portuguese midfielder may have a vital role to play this season. While the strengths of City’s other stars are obvious if Nunes plays as he did against Burnley he could be a key contributor for the remainder of the season. It may be small margins that decide the title race and Matheus Nunes could be a difference-maker.
