Could MLS legend Robbie Keane be the next LA Galaxy manager?

The LA Galaxy may be looking to their past to right the ship.

Four days after the Galaxy parted ways with Guillermo Barros Schelotto, ESPN's James Olley is reporting that the club approached former striker and Major League Soccer legend Robbie Keane about the manager's position.

Keane, who turned 40 years old in July, featured for English clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool before he made the jump to the Galaxy in the summer of 2011, and he became one of the most successful signings in the history of the North American top-flight. Playing alongside superstars David Beckham and Landon Donovan, Keane thrice lifted the MLS Cup during his tenure with LA.

He was named the 2014 MLS Cup Most Valuable Player after he scored the match-winner to defeat the New England Revolution in the Final. In total, Keane scored 83 goals in 125 appearances and remains one of the most popular figures associated with the Galaxy.

Following his playing career that ended in November 2018, Keane served as assistant manager with the Ireland national team and, later, with Championship side Middlesbrough. His spell at Middlesbrough ended in June after the club hired Neil Warnock as manager.

The Galaxy defeated Real Salt Lake 2-1 on Sunday in their first match with Dominic Kinnear in charge as interim coach and rose to 10th in the Western Conference standings following that result.
