Daniel Maldini confirms Venezuela representatives called him a few months ago, but he hasn’t heard from them again lately.

The 22-year-old, son of legendary Milan and Italy defender Paolo, is eligible to play for Venezuela’s national team through his mother, Adriana Fossa, who was born in the South American country.

Following Italy’s 2-1 win over Venezuela in March, ex-Juventus midfielder Tomas Rincon revealed he had spoken to Paolo Maldini regarding his son, who is currently on loan at Monza from Milan.

“I had been contacted months ago, but then I heard nothing more,” Daniel Maldini told Gazzetta.

“Rumours have again circulated because Italy played with Venezuela, but I repeat, I haven’t heard anyone [lately]. However, right now, I must find my dimension with Monza; it’s crucial to feel important.”

Maldini had spent the first part of the season on loan at Empoli but joined Monza on a temporary transfer in the January transfer window.

The attacking midfielder has three goals and one assist in seven Serie A appearances with the Brianzoli this term.

He is still eligible to play for Venezuela, so he hasn’t made his senior Italy debut yet. Maldini’s latest international appearances were at the U20 level with Italy.
