Denmark's Christian Eriksen having defibrillator implanted after cardiac arrest

Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen suffered cardiac arrest on the pitch during the country's Euro 2020 opener against Finland last Saturday (June 12), one of the most terrifying in-game scenes in recent memory.

Not even a week removed, however, the 29-year-old is on the road to a full recovery.

"After Christian has been through different heart examinations, it has been decided that he should have an ICD," Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen revealed in a statement, per Reuters (h/t ESPN). "This device is necessary after a cardiac attack due to rhythm disturbances. Christian has accepted the solution, and the plan has moreover been confirmed by specialists nationally and internationally who all recommend the same treatment."

An ICD is an implantable cardioverter defibrillator, as Reuters explains, "a small electronic device that is a type of pacemaker and can prevent fatal cardiac arrests by discharging a jolt to restore a regular heart rhythm."

It was a defibrillator that saved Eriksen on the pitch after his collapse, Boesen told the press Sunday (June 13), per ESPN's Connor O'Halloran.

"He was gone, and we did cardiac resuscitation. It was a cardiac arrest. How close were we [to losing Eriksen]? I don't know. We got him back after one defibrillator, so that's quite fast. I'm not a cardiologist, so the details I will leave to the experts at the hospital."

Eriksen was immediately transported to a Copenhagen hospital, alert and stable. Denmark ultimately decided to resume their match with Finland and (understandably) lost 1-0. Finland's Joel Pohjanpalo respectfully did not celebrate his 60th minute goal.

The Inter Milan star shared a positive update Tuesday (June 15):

Inter Milan director Giuseppe Marotta dispelled the rumors that Eriksen had previously contracted COVID-19 or had received a COVID-19 vaccine.

Denmark is set to play their second Euro Group B match against Belgium beginning at noon EST. Belgian star and Eriksen's Inter teammate Romelu Lukaku shared Wednesday (June 16) that the plan for the clubs to kick the ball out of bounds at the 10-minute mark to honor Erikson.
