Marcel Desailly has admitted that he is rooting for his former club AC Milan to win the Scudetto this season but he does not see them as the favourites.
A man who needs little introduction, Desailly is considered to be among the greatest centre-backs to play the game. He picked up UEFA Champions League wins with both Marseille and Milan.
He also made over 100 appearances for his country too, winning the 1998 World Cup and the European Championship two years later.
Desailly spoke to SempreInter during an event hosted by BoyleSports and he began by discussing Inter’s signing of Marcus Thuram who seemed destined to join Milan at one stage.
“I knew his father well,” Desailly began speaking of Lilian Thuram, Marcus’s father.
“He will love the passion at Inter, even if I don’t like them for good reason! I believe he will fit in. He still has to prove that he can do it, how can he play with Lautaro Martinez? How am I going to adapt my movements with him? This is key for him, instead of focusing on him and his performance.
“If he has chosen Inter then tactically he must believe he can adjust himself to Lautaro and be part of a good combination” Desailly continued.
“He can be that extra player Inter are looking for, but his weakness is scoring, he doesn’t score enough goals.”
The Frenchman also spoke about who will win Serie A this season given that it seems to be a shootout involving both Milanese teams, Napoli, Juventus and possibly others.
“I would love Napoli to win Serie A again, but the only problem is everyone knows what to expect now. They keep the ball with intensity and we didn’t see them coming,” he added.
“Suddenly, Napoli had confidence and quality players. There were lots of inconsistency in their rivals too. I am all for diversity of winners, I like it when you have different teams who win. You have to share.”
Finally, Desailly spoke about his old club Milan and their decision to sack Paolo Maldini as the technical director before an expansive summer window that saw the sale of Sandro Tonali and the signing of 10 players.
“I would like AC Milan to win it myself, of course. It is painful as they sacked Paulo Maldini, and they have made some good moves, but I am not sure it will be enough.
“Two years ago they won the league and we had overestimated them. They did not recruit enough to maintain it and keep the level. You could tell second choice players were not up to the level.
“Inter or Napoli are more likely to win it, and if I had to pick I would say Inter. I don’t see how Napoli can continue to perform this way, I don’t see it.”
