Dutch health minister: No supporters at football matches until coronavirus vaccine

Football supporters in the Netherlands may not have a true return to normal amid the coronavirus pandemic for longer than they originally feared.

Per Sky Sports, Dutch health minister Hugo de Jonge informed the country's parliament on Thursday that fans will not be allowed to attend matches and other events until a coronavirus vaccine is available.

De Jonge wrote:

"We cannot yet mention a date for the last step, the mass gatherings. That is actually only possible if there is a vaccine and no one knows how long it will take. We hope of course soon, but a year or more is very real."

All sports in Holland remain suspended until at least the end of August.

In late April, the Dutch Eredivisie voided the season that was halted the previous month because of the virus outbreak. Ajax sat atop the table and would've been crowned champions had the season been called prematurely, such as what occurred in France.

As noted by Goal.com, Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas is campaigning for the Ligue 1 season to be completed in full rather than for Paris Saint-Germain to be awarded the title for a shortened campaign.

CNN's Steve Almasy, Faith Karimi and Dakin Andone have reported that experts say a coronavirus vaccine is unlikely before the end of 2020.
