Everton shakes up Premier League with 1-0 upset of Chelsea

Everton appeared doomed for relegation and Chelsea looked destined for a third-place finish in the Premier League prior to Sunday. But Everton's shocking 1-0 win opened the door for both of those results to potentially change.

The only goal for Everton came a minute after halftime when Chelsea's César Azpilicueta misplayed the ball in front of his own goal, setting up Richarlison for his fourth goal in five matches.

While Chelsea dominated possession and put five of its 17 shots on goal, Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford kept a clean sheet with a fantastic performance.

The win is only the fourth for Everton in Premier League play in 2022, but it comes when the side desperately needed points. Everton is still sitting in the relegation zone, but it's now just two points behind both Burnley and Leeds United. Everton has five matches left to play, while Burnley and Leeds each have just four.

For Chelsea, the surprising stumble against a team near the bottom of the table likely won't cost the team a Champions League berth. But with four matches left, its sizable lead over Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal is quickly evaporating.

Tottenham is now just five points back after a 3-1 win against Leicester City. Arsenal is six points back, but can close the gap to just three if it can get a win against West Ham United on Sunday.

After losing only three matches in its first 28 matches in Premier League play this season, Chelsea has now lost three of its six matches in the last month.
