Goalkeeper Yann Sommer is targeting a return from injury in time for Inter Milan’s Serie A match against Empoli.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. The newspaper report that the 35-year-old goalkeeper’s condition is improving.

Sommer is currently dealing with a sprain to his right ankle.

The former Bayern Munich and Borussia Monchengladbach keeper had been off with the Switzerland national team for the international break.

Sommer had started for his country in a friendly match against Denmark.

However, the Inter keeper was forced off with an injury during the first half of that match.

The problem was with Sommer’s ankle. He attempted to play on but was unable to, and there was significant pain and swelling.

Sommer returned to Milan, where the Inter medical staff assessed him. They confirmed that he had suffered a sprain in tests a couple days ago.

Yann Sommer Aiming To Be Fit For Inter Vs Empoli Clash

The ankle sprain has cast doubt on whether or not Sommer would be able to return in time for Inter’s first match back from the international break.

That will be against Empoli next Monday in Serie A.

If Sommer is not available, then goalkeeper Emil Audero would be ready to start in his place.

But according to the Gazzetta, signs are starting to look optimistic that Sommer will be able to be back on the pitch for next Monday’s match.

The Swiss international’s condition has improved a fair bit in the past couple days.

Therefore, Sommer is now targeting the match against Empoli.

The same is not true, however, of striker Marko Arnautovic or defender Stefan de Vrij. Both are also out with injuries, and will not recover in time for next Monday’s match.

But Arnautovic and de Vrij are aiming to be back for the match the following weekend, against Udinese.
