Former Inter Milan captain Samir Handanovic admits that it was a “dream” to be able to play in front of the San Siro.

The Slovenian spoke to InterTV, via FCInterNews. He opened up on what being back at the “devastating” stadium means to him.

On Sunday evening, Handanovic was back at the San Siro.

The 39-year-old had hung up his gloves last summer. However, he remains very closely tied to Inter.

Subsequently, Handanovic was at the stadium for Inter’s Serie A match against Cagliari.

Handanovic is also continuing to work with the Nerazzurri off the pitch.

Reports suggest that the former keeper could take on a coaching role at the club in the future. And he is already involved in scouting.

Handanovic is among the key figures working on Inter’s search for a goalkeeper for their long-term future.

Samir Handanovic Emotional On Return To “Devastating” San Siro

Handanovic spent more than a decade wearing the Inter shirt.

The Slovenian first joined the Nerazzurri from Udinese in the summer of 2012.

And in the end, Handanovic played for the club for eleven seasons.

In over four of the years that he spent playing at the San Siro, Handanovic wore the captain’s armband.

The Slovenian took over the captaincy from Lautaro Martinez in 2019. And in the end it was another Argentine striker who would become captain after him – Lautaro Martinez.

Of being back at the San Siro, Handanovic said that “It’s a special day for me.”

“I’m grateful to the club,” the Slovenian said. “And to the fan for all the years we spent together.”

“They weren’t always easy ones,” Handanovic reflected.

The former keeper admitted, “Today I feel a bit emotional, and that’s not something that happens often to me.”

“This is a beautiful day.”

“San Siro is devastating for anyone who plays football,” Handanovic continued. “For me, it will always be the best stadium with the best fans.”

“Playing here was a dream come true for me,” the former captain concluded.
