Tottenham midfielder Pape Matar Sarr has agreed a deal in principle to sign a new contract with the club.

That’s according to the Athletic who claim that Spurs are close to securing the midfielder to a new long-term contract.

The report claims that the player has agreed the outline of the new and improved contract.

It adds that while a contract has not been formally signed yet, an announcement is imminent.

The 21-year-old is having a breakthrough season under Ange Postecoglou, having moved ahead of the likes of Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the pecking order.

He has established himself as one of the first names on the starting XI alongside Yves Bissouma.

He has started 16 games so far, scoring twice, once during their 2-0 win against United and one earlier today against Bournemouth. However, it turned into a disappointing afternoon for the Senegalese as he was forced off in the 30th minutes with an injury.

His absence will be a blow for Spurs and his country who he was to travel with for the AFCON.

The extent of his injury is yet to be revealed but he could end up missing the tournament for his country.
