Spanish playmaker David Silva was only a single step away from signing for Lazio before joining Real Sociedad on a free transfer last summer.

As revealed in The Laziali’s exclusive interview with Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, the 35-year-old Spaniard had reached a total agreement with the Biancocelesti last summer, with the contract verbally agreed and even medicals being scheduled in Rome.

The club had also even begun preparing the announcement for the talented midfielder.

However, everything changed after the former Manchester City man spoke to his family, where he decided that a return to Spain would be preferable, with Real Sociedad’s offer proving convincing enough.

This situation is not entirely uncommon, especially with free agents, with a recent example being Georginio Wijnaldum’s collapsed move to Barcelona and subsequent agreement with Paris Saint-Germain. Sometimes players even sign pre-contracts before changing their minds.

Silva made 26 appearances across all competitions this season for Real Sociedad, for a total of 1836 minutes. In that time, he scored two goals and provided five assists.
