Cameroonian defender Joel Matip has been offered to Lazio after recently leaving Liverpool and becoming a free agent.

The 32-year-old is Schalke youth product who rose through the club’s ranks before making the move to Anfield in 2016. He became an integral member of Jurgen Klopp’s side that went on to win the Champions League in 2018/19 and the Premier League in the following campaign.

After six years with the Reds, Matip followed his manager to the exit door. He has now become a free agent after seeing out his contract with the Merseyside club.

According to Il Corriere dello Sera via LazioNews24, the Biancocelesti have been offered Matip’s services over the last few hours. As the source explains, the centre-back was also proposed to Lazio’s arch-rivals Roma in the past few weeks.

The report adds that Lazio president Claudio Lotito is now reflecting on the offer. However, the Bochum native isn’t part of the Italian capital club’s plans at the moment. So it remains to be seen if there will be any developments on this track in the coming days, as the Cameroon international continues to push for a Serie A move.

Lazio’s centre-back department includes Alessio Romagnoli, Patric, Nicolo Casale and Mario Gila.
