Former Celtic striker and current pundit, Ian Wright was left in disbelief after watching Daizen Maeda’s performance for Japan against Germany in the shocking Japanese victory in the Qatar World Cup.
Germany was left dumbfounded to concede two goals in the second half and lost their opening match of the 2022 Qatar World Cup. This isn’t the only shocking result in this year’s World Cup, as Argentina were defeated at the hands of Saudi Arabia, who broke Argentina’s 36-game-long undefeated streak.
Ian Wright voiced his disbelief over the Celtic striker’s performance for Japan, saying that he thinks that Maeda was simply too eager to score. Maeda’s eagerness resulted in him missing key chances that could have ended up with the ball in the net. It was somewhat surprising for Celtic fans to see the selected Japanese squad, as Reo Hatate and Kyogo, who have been in better form than Maeda, were left out, while Maeda was given a starting jersey.
This comes after Hatate and Kyogo were overlooked by the Japanese Boss, Hajime Moriyasu, in the International friendlies in Germany prior to the start of the World Cup in Qatar.
Maeda was substituted in the 57th minute for Takuma Asano, who scored the winning goal for Japan. This may result in Maeda having to battle to keep his space in the starting eleven. Ian Wright spoke on ITV and said…
“I cannot believe the striker has been so eager to get in. He’s got one goal in eight for the national side and he’s so eager to score this goal. He doesn’t need to go that quickly, just hold the run! The ball is so good that he would have got it.”
