Galaxy's Derrick Williams suspended five extra games for horrific tackle

L.A. Galaxy defender Derrick Williams was sent off in the May 22 Major League Soccer regular-season match versus the Portland Timbers for a shocking tackle on Andy Polo that left the Portland forward for the rest of the season with a ruptured quadriceps and torn meniscus in his left knee.

Williams has already served his mandatory one-game red card suspension, but the MLS Disciplinary Committee announced Friday the 28-year-old has been banned an additional five matches and also fined an undisclosed amount.

"Under Parameter No. 2, supplemental discipline (suspension and/or fine) will be administered if the Disciplinary Committee believes the offense is egregious in nature, and/or it must act to protect player safety, and/or it must protect the integrity of the game, and/or the player is guilty of repeat behavior," MLS explained.

During the week that followed the Galaxy-Timbers match, Williams unveiled that he had suffered racist abuse online. "The club is working with Major League Soccer and the proper authorities to identify any and all abusers," the Galaxy said in a statement last week. "We will take the appropriate next steps to protect Derrick and all of our players from these acts of hate."

Per the schedule, Williams would be eligible to return for the July 17 matchup against the Vancouver Whitecaps.
