Gennaro Gattuso has not had the most ideal of starts to his new spell at Olympique de Marseille, with the Italian manager winning just two of his five matches so far with the French giants. However, he is confident of birthing a winning mentality as the club goes in search of a first major trophy in over a decade.

Speaking ahead of Marseille’s 3-1 victory over AEK Athens in the UEFA Europa League group stage encounter at the Orange Velodrome, Gattuso didn’t make room for any excuses.

“Every detail counts, I destroy my players even on how they wear their socks. I don’t want to hear about bad luck or refereeing. For me only the victory counts but in relation to the overall path. I like it when people simply say: ‘OM plays well’, I also want it to be a great team that wins.” (via LaLazioSiamoNoi)

Gattuso urged for less excuses and more focus.

“And I don’t want to hear about refereeing, bad luck. If we change this mentality we will build leaders: you don’t become one on your own.”

The ex-Milan and Napoli manager is set to take on ex-Azzurri compatriot and fellow World Cup winner Fabio Grosso in Derby des Olympiques. However, in stark contrast to OM, Lyon lie at the bottom of the Ligue 1 table, with Grosso still winless after four games.
