Robin Gosens left Inter Milan during the summer transfer window because he felt that playing time was necessary.

The 29-year-old spoke to German broadcaster RND, via FCInter1908, opening up on his reasons to depart from the Nerazzurri after one and a half seasons.

Gosens joined Union Berlin this summer.

The German made the decision to depart from Inter one and a half seasons after he had arrived from Atalanta.

When Gosens made the move to Inter, he had come with big expectations on his shoulders.

Whilst at La Dea, Gosens had been one of the outstanding wingbacks in Serie A, if not all of European football.

And on paper at least, the German would fit perfectly into Simone Inzaghi’s system at Inter.

In his first half a season as a Nerazzurri, Gosens never quite nailed down a starting berth for himself.

This was not necessarily a big surprise.

First of all, there was the fact that Gosens made the move to Inter whilst he was still recovering from a long-term muscle injury.

Then, there was the fact that the outstanding form of Ivan Perisic was always going to make it tough to displace the Croat.

But then last season Perisic departed. And it was Federico Dimarco rather than Gosens who really filled his shoes in the starting eleven.

Robin Gosens: Left Inter Milan For Greater Playing Time

“At Inter it was different,” Gosens said.

“I couldn’t afford to have another season where I was out of the starting eleven ahead of the Euros,” he co0ntinued.

The current Union wingback explained that “The road to the European Championships is still difficult.”

“But it can only be achieved through a good season with my club.”

“From a personal point of view I’ve started well, even if the results at Union haven’t been the best so far.”
