Germany's Bundesliga to resume play this month

This is an extremely good sign for soccer fans around the globe. Germany's Bundesliga is set to return this month, according to an ESPN Germany correspondent.

Germany's government and federal states have been given the all-clear, and a start date will be determined later this month. The earliest the league can resume is May 15, but May 22 has also been floated as a possible re-start date.

The league has nine matchdays left and there is a commitment to finish the season by June 30. Fans will not be allowed into stadiums, as there still is a ban on mass events in Germany until Aug. 31.

Bundesliga players resumed training in early April with players and staff being tested regularly for the coronavirus.

When the league put a halt to its season, here's how things stood at the top of the standings in Bundesliga:

  1. FC Bayern Munchen: 17-4-4, 55 points
  2. Borussia Dortmund: 15-6-4, 51 points
  3. RB Leipzig: 14-8-3, 50 points
  4. Borussia Mönchengladbach: 15-4-6, 49 points
  5. Bayer 04 Leverkusen: 14-5-6, 47 points

While Bundesliga will return, France, Belgium and the Netherlands have canceled their seasons and Italy, Spain and England are hoping for a possible June return.
