Hansi Flick's hiring signals Barcelona expects immediate results
On Wednesday, FC Barcelona announced it had signed a two-year deal with Hansi Flick, the former Bayern Munich and Germany manager who will replace Xavi Hernandez.
"It is a big honor and a dream to sign the contract with this amazing club," Flick said via ESPN's Sam Marsden and Moises Llorens. "The hours I have been here in Barcelona have been amazing. Everyone here loves this club and gives their best to have success."
The German national team fired Flick in September 2023 following a group-stage exit at the 2022 World Cup. However, his tenure with Bayern Munich was much more successful. In two seasons under Flick, the club won two Bundesliga titles and the 2019-20 UEFA Champions League.
Flick believes he could produce similar results in Barcelona.
"I won titles with Bayern," Flick said, per Marsden and Llorens. "My hunger for titles is really big, and I would like to stay on this path with Barcelona. We can achieve a lot together."
Flick's hiring came as a surprise. In January, Xavi — whose contract ran through 2025 — announced he would leave Barcelona, citing the mental toll of an underwhelming season. He reportedly changed his mind after a meeting with team president Joan Laporta in late April.
However, per the Associated Press, Xavi recently told fans not to get "too excited about the summer transfer market since there was little money to spend." This comment upset Laporta and led to the manager's dismissal.
Regardless, Barcelona may want Flick to deliver immediately. After winning the 2022-23 La Liga title, Barça (85 points) finished second behind rival Real Madrid (95 points) this past season.
