While Manchester City lick their wounds following last night’s UEFA Champions League exit at the hands of Real Madrid, it does appear that a busy summer may lie ahead for the world champions. The future of tow key players appears in doubt. With that in mind it does appear that City may hit the transfer market to refresh their squad. If that is the case has the identity of City’s number one summer transfer target been revealed?

Jacob Steinberg has reported for the Guardian that Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala has emerged as Manchester City’s top target this summer. Furthermore, Steinberg reports that Pep Guardiola wants more options in attacking midfield in his squad. In addition to wanting more options in midfield, Steinberg further reports that Manchester City is at the front of the queue to sign Musiala if he does depart Bayern Munich this summer.

There is the potential for it to be a busy summer window for Manchester City. As it stands, there is speculation surrounding the futures of Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne. Fichajes has reported that Bernardo is a top target for PSG this summer. Meanwhile, Saudi Pro League interest in Kevin De Bruyne remains Sam Lee has reported for the Athletic.

If one or both of City’s key players were to depart Manchester City this summer, there would be a need for another attacking midfielder in Pep Guardiola’s squad. Jamal Musiala, given his age, talent, and potential, appears ideally suited to slot into the world champions squad. It may take a sizable transfer fee to secure Musiala’s signature but given his standing in the game and obvious suitability for Pep Guardiola’s demands it does appear to be a sound investment if a move to Manchester City were to materialise.

There could potentially be an impediment to Manchester City’s chase for Jamal Musiala. Bayern Munich is set to announce a new manager at the end of the season after Thomas Tuchel departs the club at the end of the season. There is no doubt that the incoming Bayern manager will aim to build his team around Musiala. If the Bundesliga giants’ next manager can convince Musiala that his future lies at Bayern, it may halt City’s potential move in its tracks.

Jacob Steinberg’s report indicates that Manchester City have identified their number one summer transfer target. Now, it will become a waiting game to see if they sign Musiala if does decide to leave Bayern Munich.
